Bandwidth Hawk is staff-written by Steve Ross. It has appeared in every issue since 2005. As we are a business, not technology, magazine, significant new federal funding and economic headwinds dominated the Hawk’s 2022 coverage. COVID's demands for schooling and working at home had exposed the need, for faster, more reliable networks and for new mechanisms to assure disadvantaged households could afford broadband services. We had long seen the societal need and the business opportunity for broadband deployers. But how might the industry cope with inflation and labor/equipment shortages as funding increased?
Broadband Communities had emerged as a particularly trusted data source on industry and societal needs, for federal, state and local officials of all political parties. The vast majority of our readers – government officials, activists, bankers and other funders, employees, and executives of more than 2,000 local broadband carriers owned by real estate developers, governments, cooperatives, family businesses and small companies -- had come to value our studies as honest and published with detailed explanations about possible risks. Our financial models are by far the most widely used worldwide by broadband deployers and funders.
Thus, the magazine in general and Bandwidth Hawk in particular shifted to even more detailed analysis of where existing federal and state funds were already being spent, and how new funding might be used. As 2022 began, a staggering $65 billion in new federal funding had been created. If spent right starting this year, it could fill all broadband access gaps nationwide.
