In the April cover story, Doctor Deficit, Amy Keller examined Florida’s looming physician shortage that is projected to leave the state 18,000 doctors short by 2035. To gain insight into the problem, Amy conducted extensive interviews with physicians and leaders at a number of hospital systems around the state. She also spoke with leaders of health care industry groups. The feature presents the story as vignettes that explore the reasons for the projected shortfall and examine an array of potential solutions to address the shortage. The story also uses data from state surveys and reports to analyze where doctor shortages are most acute and which specialties face the biggest projected shortfall. A companion piece examines the state’s ongoing nursing shortage crisis.
