Best Body of Work Essay: 
After working on staff as an editor and manager at a scientific society for many years, I realized that I wanted to get back to my true love—writing about science and talking to scientists. I jumped into freelancing in 2023 and have not looked back, writing for many outlets such as INFORM magazine, a publication for scientists from the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS). AOCS is a membership organization of scientists who study fats, proteins, and other biomolecules to make the foods and products we buy better and more appealing to consumers.

My clips for this award entry are all from INFORM, and they distill very technical science concepts into language that any reader can understand. Some of my stories describe advances in food science, from building better infant formulas to making better sourdough bread. One story was even about making a food more bland! Soy researchers want to remove its off-flavors, and this story discussed how they are solving this problem for the consumer. I’ve also written about materials that could make your laundry cleaner and construction glues that are more environmentally friendly.

INFORM’s strength is that it explains science to scientists who may not work in that specific research area. In fact, a researcher I interviewed recently was very excited to be featured in the publication because it did such a great job of doing this. I really appreciate being a small part of this magazine’s content as a freelance science writer, and I hope to continue bringing scientists’ work to others.
