Entry Essay:
Published by the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED), “tED” magazine is the primary source of information for the electrical distribution channel across North America. “tED” covers what electrical distributors need to know to better perform their day-to-day functions. Suppliers also read “tED” to learn how to better go to market through distribution.
“tED” magazine is designed with the intention of providing consistency throughout. Specific type families and color palettes are used so the reader can easily distinguish the ads from the editorial and to better brand “tED” throughout the issue.
“tED” ’s design uses a color hierarchy. The tan color ties the entire magazine together and represents the color of shipping boxes, the most common element in distribution. The main departments are color-coded, and the color that represents each is introduced by the running heads, switching from the tan used in the front and back of book sections. Within the departments, the color is used as accents regarding sidebar styles, pull-quotes, etc. This helps readers navigate to specific departments much faster, and the color treatment is duplicated within the contents page to help facilitate that as well.
Other editorial enhancements include nuggets of information that are used throughout, allowing for more design elements and treatments to break up the monotony between articles. All consist of a similar treatment that appears 3-dimensional with a strong, diagonal shadow, furthering the effort to provide a cohesive design—lessening confusion for readers.
