Entry Essay:
The June/July 2025 American Fruit Grower State of the Industry issue stands apart from our regular editorial calendar because it was not simply reported, it was built directly from the voices of our audience. Designed as a special supplement focused on a single, unifying theme — the real-world challenges and priorities of today’s fruit growers — this issue represents one of the most comprehensive, reader-driven editorial projects our publication has produced.
To develop this issue, we distributed our annual State of the Industry survey to approximately 800 subscribers and achieved an extraordinary response rate of nearly 75%, more than double the industry average. That level of participation underscores both the trust our readers place in AFG and the urgency they feel about the issues facing their operations. Growers were not just respondents; they became collaborators in shaping the editorial direction of this special report.
The resulting issue transformed raw survey data into meaningful, actionable journalism. Our editorial team analyzed trends and insights from growers across the country, then translated that information into clear, visually engaging stories that helped readers better understand where the industry stands and where it is headed. This issue was distinctly different from a standard edition in both scope and structure: every feature, department and design element was guided by a singular goal, which was to reflect the state of fruit production through the lens of those living it every day.
Coverage spanned a wide range of critical topics, including production shifts from 2024-2025, crop nutrition, pest pressures, emerging apple varieties, cherry disease management, berry and grape production outlooks, nut industry trends, regulatory challenges, weather impacts and investment priorities. The issue also featured a compelling orchard grower profile that humanized the data, illustrating resilience and adaptation during difficult seasons. A Western Fruit Grower exclusive insight report further expanded the value of the Special Report, offering regional depth alongside national perspective.
What truly elevates this entry is how the content continued to serve readers beyond a single publication date. Survey results and analysis informed editorial planning throughout the remainder of the year, ensuring that coverage remained aligned with growers’ most pressing concerns. This long-tail impact demonstrates how a well-executed special issue can shape not only one edition, but an entire year of reporting.
From an organizational and visual standpoint, the issue was carefully designed to make complex information accessible. Charts, callouts and infographics turned data into clear takeaways, while a clean, cohesive layout guided readers through a large volume of content without overwhelming them. Importantly, every aspect of the supplement, from story selection to design execution, was fully editorially controlled, maintaining the integrity and independence required for this category.
This State of the Industry issue exemplifies what a special report should be: distinctive in purpose, comprehensive in scope and deeply valuable to its audience. By elevating grower voices, delivering data-driven insight and presenting it in a clear, compelling format, AFG produced a supplement that documented the state of the industry and actively helped shape its future.
