Entry Essay: 
The November/December 2025 issue of Contingencies marks a pivotal moment for both the magazine and the actuarial profession. This issue celebrated the 60th anniversary of the American Academy of Actuaries, our publisher, while unveiling a refreshed nameplate and its first ever tagline, signaling a new era for the publication. The cover design was carefully crafted to reflect the issue’s editorial focus, support the magazine’s mission, and engage our specialized audience of actuaries and risk professionals.

The design was deliberately bold. Cover 1 uses a clean white background, drawing the reader in with simplicity and focus—a visual pause that mirrors the reflective tone of an anniversary issue. Subtle elements of this first cover lead into Cover 2, which bursts with color and light through a celebratory cake. The transition between the two covers creates a cohesive visual narrative, signaling both the Academy’s milestone and the energy of a magazine refreshed for today’s readership.

Cover lines were selected to highlight the significance of the anniversary: “When it all began” encourages reflection on the Academy’s origins, while “A Milestone Worth Celebrating” underscores the Academy's 60 years. The second cover prominently showcases the redesigned nameplate and tagline, balancing respect for the publication’s history with a modern, forward-looking identity. Typography choices—clean, precise, and readable—guide the eye naturally and reinforce the cover’s clarity and hierarchy.

This cover goes beyond decoration. It sets the tone for the issue, signaling both the importance of the Academy’s legacy and the relevance of the content within. It communicates purpose, draws the reader in, and visually reinforces the magazine’s evolution. By blending thoughtful editorial messaging with deliberate design choices, the cover makes the issue approachable, engaging, and memorable.
