Entry Essay:
BioSpace helps biopharma professionals make sense of a fast-paced, complex industry so they can better manage their careers. From researchers to regulators to C-suite executives, industry professionals rely on BioSpace for up-to-the-minute news and unique perspectives on a range of issues, including the overall health of the sector, hot new drug classes, strategic business decisions and changing policies and legal decisions. At the same time, we offer an active job board for companies that are hiring and individuals looking for work, plus career advice for professionals across sectors and stages of their careers.
In July 2024, BioSpace re-launched its website on a new publishing platform (Brightspot) to better serve readers with improved user experience and accessibility on both desktop and mobile. Content on the site is clearly laid out with thoughtful information architecture, concise menus based on user interest and click-through content tags, plus a highly effective search function. Custom imagery throughout the site provides a modern, engaging visual experience.
We have quickly taken advantage of the improved functionality Brightspot affords. In our editorial coverage, the team has used Flourish embeds to provide engaging and informative data visualizations. As an example, we included a story illustrating the dominance of Eli Lilly—and rival Novo Nordisk—that could make it hard for up-and-comers in the exploding obesity sector. Additional examples of the improved website functionality include our redesigned Hotbed pages that now offer an interactive experience and podcasts now integrated into the site, with new episodes released every week.
BioSpace’s improved web presence has gone hand in hand with a major push to increase our editorial coverage of the biopharma industry. One area of focus is the billions of dollars that flow through the biopharma industry. In May 2024, pharma giant AstraZeneca set a massive annual revenue target of $80 billion, prompting us to take a deep dive into market caps of the biggest pharmaceutical companies—and the large biotechs that could one day soon be considered part of the Big Pharma club. We also extensively cover regulatory issues such as the increased scrutiny on the FDA’s accelerated approval program following a handful of market withdrawals of drugs greenlit through this pathway.
Turning to the science that underlies innovation in this industry, we’ve included stories that unpack the history of the first new schizophrenia treatment in 35 years, explore the pivot of the breakthrough oncology therapeutic class CAR T cells to autoimmune conditions, and dissect recent progress against glioblastoma, a deadly brain cancer that has long stumped drug developers. In addition, our special edition on psychedelics for mental health takes a deep dive into the pipeline of this drug class that has yet to reach the U.S. market.
Finally, we selected a story on one potential consequence of the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2024 decision to strike down Chevron deference, a ruling that has thrown the authority of many federal agencies into question. This is a fresh angle on a legal decision whose impacts span industries.
