Entry Essay: 
After covering years of buildup, Automotive News was witness to a reckoning for electric and autonomous vehicles in 2024. Multibillion-dollar investments in technology and manufacturing infrastructure were not paying off as expected. Automotive News highlighted the fallout from the industry’s shifting winds in our May 20, May 27 and June 3 issues. We examined the complex policy debate surrounding EVs in a June 3 special report. We showed Tesla’s changing focus as it faces heightened competition in our May 27 issue, which dedicated the entire front page to the industry’s bumpy EV transition. The May 20 issue notes the contradictions of EV sales plunging while automakers continue to pour money into the technology. A feature inside that same issue shows how hybrid technology that was largely passed over as automakers raced toward EVs is now influencing the Indianapolis 500.
