Entry Essay:
The April, May and June-July issues of hfm, the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s flagship magazine, exemplify the high-level range of work the editorial division of HFMA is producing. All three issues feature breaking news analysis, feature stories, commentaries, and in-depth peer review articles, all with a pleasing design that’s easy to navigate. More specifically:
April 2024: The cover story, “Battle of the Bots,” was one of the first articles in the country to address the growing friction between healthcare providers and health insurers, both of which are increasingly armed with artificial intelligence capabilities leaving patients trapped in the middle. The outcome of that fight may determine how many of the insured are able to get care when they need it. All of this has been thrust into the spotlight with recent events involving the shooting of United Healthcare’s CEO. This edition also explored trends that are important to hospital board members, as well as reactions to the major Change Healthcare cyberattack.
May 2024: In this edition, hfm profiled a little-known health system based in Rapid City, S.D., which is aggressively working to ensure its patients are getting the financial assistance they qualify for. Other articles include an expert-written research article that describes how to better engage patients by ensuring that its care network of clinicians is reliably correct.
June-July 2024: The cover story for this issue is a profile of HFMA’s incoming chairman, a perennial article to coincide with HFMA’s annual conference. The profile underscores the depth of the problems facing healthcare financial leaders, and how the Association’s new chair hopes to push the industry to improve care for an aging population, address a shortage of healthcare workers and limit the cost of healthcare to consumers and the nation.
The magazine seeks to engage readers by maintaining a balance of readability and thoughtful depth of coverage, regular columns and features, with all original content, enhanced by a lively, colorful design.
