Entry Essay: 
Reporters Lillianna Byington and Kellie Lunney set out to test the Biden administration’s promises to supply enough public electric vehicle charging stations to boost use of plug-in EVs. They reported the story via renting a non-Tesla plug-in EV and took it on an 840-mile road trip between Washington, D.C., and New York State, during which they almost ran out of charge multiple times because of lack of access to the vaunted and promised charger network. The story is an excellent example of showing rather than telling as the facts alone poke holes in the charger promises.

The interactive graphics help illustrate the journey in a scrolling format that also tracks the car’s charge and charging costs, and a separate interactive map helps readers see the nationwide buildout. To help readers feel even more like they were along for the ride, a TikTok featuring clips from the trip received more than 3,200 hits.
