Entry Essay:
Pensions & Investments, a Crain Communications brand, is the international news source of money management, covering the world's largest pension funds, U.S. and international retirement plans, sovereign wealth funds, endowments and foundations. P&I writes about institutional investors around the world, providing breaking news, analysis, features and enterprise reporting, along with events, conferences and social media.
P&I's popular Face-to-Face feature aims to conduct in-depth interviews with chief investment officers of some of the nation's largest pension plans. The goals is to provide readers with insights into how their peers are thinking about how best to invest billion-dollar portfolios, as well as to give readers a sense of how they approach the job and its myriad demands, including hiring, managing and building a staff. For the September, Face to Face, we interviewed Jill Schurtz, CIO of the Minnesota State Board of Investment, which oversees more than $146 billion in assets. We wanted to talk to Ms. Schurtz for several reasons: She was two years into her new role, she is one of a small number of top-level women in a largely male-dominated world of CIOs, and she had a really interesting background: She's a West Point graduate. We were curious about how that experience shaped her worldview. Our Face-to-Face interviews aim to give readers an up close look at the person behind the desk. And a Q&A format allows their voice to come through, unfiltered.
