Entry Essay:
restaurant development + design (rd+d) is the only user-driven resource for restaurant professionals charged with building new locations and remodeling existing units. It provides a platform that allows professionals from divergent backgrounds to come together to share best practices, perspectives, and experiences in the pursuit of developing solutions they can apply in the development and design of new and existing restaurants.
In 2024, rd+d got its first redesign in over ten years of being published. Working hand in hand with the editors our goal was to meet the new needs for content that keeps subtly changing over the years.
We kept restaurant development + design’s iconic “+” symbol and yellow to carry the brand into the new design but introduced a new slab serif font and blue accent color to give the design a fresh feeling. We also introduced new bold graphic elements like yellow speech bubbles and graphic sidebars to help break up the content and make it more digestible for the reader.
The slightly larger slab serif font is easier on the eyes, especially when reading lengthy amounts of text and when bolded has a greater contrast than the previous design. We also took advantage of the exceptional and visually appealing images, by making sure that we present them large as possible.
