Entry Essay:
Thousands of cybersecurity professionals, researchers and academics descended on Las Vegas in early August 2024 to connect with industry peers and learn about the latest research and innovations in cybersecurity. Of the myriad events happening that week — the industry commonly refers to the week of BSides Las Vegas, Black Hat USA and DEF CON as "hacker summer camp" — Black Hat USA is at the center of everything.
It’s an all-hands-on-deck effort by the Dark Reading team to cover the show.
Under the leadership of Managing Editor of News Tara Seals, the editorial team and a core group of freelancers began conference coverage a month prior. We look for the agenda’s most compelling sessions and interview presenters set to reveal research findings that have never been published. We also preview the sessions, focusing on the newsworthy findings that will be covered at the live event.
This preview process serves dual purposes: Our readers count on Dark Reading to provide an early preview of the cutting-edge research to be presented during the conference to help them plan their schedules for when they attend the show. Speakers sit down with Dark Reading to drum up interest among future conference-goers and encourage them to attend their sessions. This preview content is a rich trove of often exclusive, differentiated information that readers can’t get elsewhere.
Writing and publishing these previews is also critical to planning Dark Reading’s live coverage. During the conference, this frees up the team to focus on keynotes and significant news from the show.
During the event, readers unable to attend rely on Dark Reading to tell them what happened on-site. Black Hat also hosts a Shark Tank-style competition where startup founders show off their companies to a panel of judges. Dark Reading’s editorial team publishes profiles of these early-stage startups so readers can learn about new companies.
The editorial team attends keynotes, interviews cybersecurity executives and researchers, and runs the News Desk video broadcast. Researchers and industry experts visit the News Desk video booth for 10-minute interviews that stream on YouTube and Dark Reading’s website over two days. Some interviews are about the Black Hat presentations, while others focus on industry trends. The team spends months leading up to the conference identifying the dozens of guests to interview. Contributing Editor Terry Sweeney and Senior Editor Becky Bracken interview most of the guests. At the same time, Dark Reading Editor-in-Chief Kelly Jackson Higgins and Managing Editor of Features Fahmida Y. Rashid also participated. The team continues the conversations after the conference by publishing links to the individual interviews on Dark Reading.
Whether readers are in Las Vegas or back home, Dark Reading ensures no one misses out by highlighting vital coverage for the broader cybersecurity community.
