Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Network Computing serves an audience of enterprise network managers and network architects.
Most people are familiar with 5G phone services. But 5G technology also holds promise to revolutionize corporate connectivity. Rather than relying on cable and wire-based broadband services, 5G can wirelessly connect a user, remote site, or branch office without the need for extensive wiring. However, there are financial, regulatory, and technical issues that can potentially limit its adoption.
In these articles, Network Computing editors explored the benefits of 5G as a broadband alternative and the factors that prevented its use in this manner. The two editors combined have over 70 years of experience writing about this market.
Perhaps the biggest challenge in reporting on the topic was that there were numerous regulatory issues that varied from country to country and, in some cases, from very one narrow location to another. In one case, the mere suggestion that 5G services were interfering with airline navigation resulted in a mandated change in the services around airports.
Many network managers have experienced the frustration of their 5G not quite living up to its promises. In “Is Your 5G Service Slow? Join the Club” Sal Salamone explains why your 5G may be underwhelming (while remaining scrupulously fair to the tech’s feelings). Providing detailed explanations, data, and interviews, it is a thorough, helpful (and emotionally validating) read for our audience.
“Private 5G: Not as Scary as You Think” and “Fixed Wireless: An Enterprise Broadband Alternative” Zeus Kerravala and Bob Wallace investigate emerging technologies that can further aid our audience get through the challenges of 3G sunsetting, poor broadband access, and help them really take advantage of the best 5G has to offer.
With an eye on how regulations abroad impact 5G in the US, Bob Wallace has kept an eye on the impact of telecom regulations in the EU and the impending “sunsetting” of 3G. His reporting found that deploying 5G services was quite a costly proposition for telecom providers. Radio waves for previous 3G and 4G services propagated over long distances. So, a single antenna could serve entire areas and tens of thousands of users. In contrast, 5G operates at higher frequencies. The benefit of that is that it supports much higher data transmission rates. The downside is that the signal easily attenuates. So, many more antennas must be deployed to serve the same area. That drives up the cost to the provider. We found that some European providers were seeking help, asking regulators if they could charge their biggest users of the service more.
Even with these limitations and issues, we did find that 5G has the potential to revolutionize the way businesses and other organizations support the high bandwidth needs of their applications, users, and sites. The reporting and analysis is uniquely tuned for the Network Computing reader in an ocean of 5G news.
