Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
General Motors wants to regain control over essential non-driving functions in its cars– navigation and entertainment. The goal is to figure out how to make these functions revenue sources. Think about Disney, Netflix and the television streaming business model. But there's a hitch – Apple. Through its CarPlay app, which mirrors a phone on a vehicle's infotainment screen, Apple already provides navigation, music, audio, and messaging apps popular with millions of drivers. Google has a similar system with its Android Auto app. These services are included with a phone and cell service, cutting out the automaker, who once could charge $1,000 or more for an embedded navigation system. In her April 26 report, GM axing Apple CarPlay is part of a larger automaker battle over control and revenue, Automotive News reporter Molly Boigon explains GM's strategy and details how fighting Apple is an uphill battle. This will become an important business strategy and consumer issue in the coming years as GM releases many new electric vehicle models without CarPlay.
