In November 2022, when OpenAI released ChatGPT, a generative AI application built on top of a large language model, few could have predicted it would capture the imagination of the general public, let alone the legal industry, so quickly and thoroughly. Yet, the ability of ChatGPT and its competitors to process a large amount of information quickly and while allowing users to submit queries in natural language and receive responses that mimic human conversation could have a transformative effect on the practice of law. And, for people who can’t afford lawyers, the technology could yet be the next best thing, allowing them to navigate a complex and arcane legal system with an intuitive tool that potentially knows more about the law than even the best lawyers and judges. Of course, with any technology, there are potential pitfalls and ethical traps. So lawyers best proceed with caution.
