In this essay, the author—a physician who has experienced racism regularly—reflects on his own racial misunderstandings. He relates two instances in which he assumed his patients had racist motivations; in fact, he learns, he had misunderstood them. The experiences cause him to reflect on whether he has become overly sensitive to questions about his background. Ultimately, it leads him to demand change in the institutions that engrain racism into our culture—unequal access to education, cancer treatment, career opportunities, and salary, as well as to justice, respect, and freedom.
