It’s typical for cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to surge in the colder months. This fall, however, brought an unusually early and prolific season—particularly among children—likely related to the relaxation of measures implemented to minimize COVID-19 transmission. Although most cases of RSV are mild, infants, older adults and people with certain illnesses can become seriously ill. I spoke with a pediatric pharmacist, infectious diseases physicians and a spokesperson from Sanofi (which is developing an investigational therapy to prevent serious disease related to RSV). My article focused on how health-system pharmacies have responded to the surge in pediatric cases and the challenges they have faced. It also discussed the difficulties in treating RSV (as my sources explained, there’s no one “magic treatment” for this illness) and described better therapies and vaccines that may soon hit the clinic. My goal for this article was to highlight the ways in which RSV has stretched pediatric healthcare providers thin (and how adult-focused colleagues can pitch in), what measures health systems can take to deal with the influx of cases and the nuances related to treating RSV, and to provide a forward-looking examination of how the landscape for preventing and treating RSV may soon change.
