Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
K-12 Dive reporter Naaz Modan’s article “Being Black in Education” examines the challenges Black education leaders face. Modan approached the story from multiple angles, using firsthand experiences, data, education policies and practices, budget reports, research, case studies and history to answer essential questions: What is contributing to Black educator turnover, and what must change to recruit and retain more Black leaders?
After months of interviews with school and district leaders, researchers and organizations, the story looks at inequitable practices and other systemic barriers that prevent Black education leaders from progressing in their careers. Modan explains how it starts when future Black educators are still in school themselves. When Black students have Black teachers, scores improve, college enrollment increases and disciplinary problems decrease. Modan also explains how challenges carry over even after Black educators make it to the profession with internal politics and microaggressions
Working with Industry Dive’s data and design team, Modan interpreted a decade of California test score data to examine the impact a Black leader can have on traditionally marginalized students. Modan also collected data compiled by researchers to examine discrepancies in key areas like pay, contract terms, and likelihood of employment to examine why Black educators are not always given the opportunity to make that impact.
The result is a comprehensive look at the unique landscape that Black leaders have to navigate, one that comes at a time of heightened unrest, and which district leaders can use to examine and improve their policies and practices.
