For more than 20 years, Club Industry has published the Top 100 Health Clubs list as a measure of the health of the U.S. fitness industry, ranking health clubs by revenue from the prior year. Our list is the only one of its kind for the industry and, as such, is highly anticipated each year. The 2021 list reported 2020 revenue, so it reflected the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the industry, in a year in which clubs were closed for one month to one year and often reopened under capacity limitations. The restrictions caused bankruptcies, permanent closures and major revenue decreases. Because of this, some health club operators declined to share their 2020 revenue, which led to a shortened list. Readers can view the list as a PDF and a photo gallery. Our main accompanying story outlines factors that impacted revenue for the top 20 companies, determined by reviewing SEC filings and news stories as well as talking with individuals at some of the companies. Because of the pandemic’s significant impact on the industry in 2020, we wrote a second story analyzing how longer closures vs. shorter closures and capacity restrictions impacted revenue for clubs in certain states. The industry is seeking sponsors for the GYMS Act, which would offer funding to specific to the industry. The National Health and Fitness Alliance presented the list and two articles to sponsors of this bill to help illustrate the depth of the pandemic’s impact on the fitness industry.
