Books, magazines, articles, and blog posts about leadership abound. To write a monthly column on leadership and management that will grab readers' attention, an author has to have something different and compelling to say. Our columnist flouts the typical jargon-ridden approach, instead trying to connect with readers on a more personal level. In the two submitted pieces, he engages the reader with humor and sports. "A CSO and a Sea Horse Walk Into a Bar" lures the casual reader into the article with its jarring, unexpected title. For this item, the columnist researched hundreds of jokes, selecting, tweaking, and even creating his own jokes that could humorously convey important lessons in leadership. In "When Good Leaders Are Poor Practitioners," our columnist again captures and disarms the audience by confessing that he is a lifelong fan of one of the worst teams in the NFL. He uses the team's suspect quarterback situation as a springboard for discussing the very real phenomenon of leaders who don't do well on the technical aspects of their job. Every month our columnist engages the readership in a new and unusual way--such as through satire, seasonal commentary, emerging trends, and, of course, humor and sports.
