In 1991, Washington Post journalist Joel Garreau published "Edge City," an engaging, in-depth look at new modes of suburban office and retail development that emerged in U.S. in the post-war years. To mark the 30th anniversary of Garreau's influential book, Development magazine sat down with Garreau to discuss the origin of "Edge City," as well as his thoughts on the future of cities — edge and otherwise. (As of this writing, Development's interview with Garreau appears to be the first he's given with any organization to mark the 30th anniversary of his landmark book.) Along the way, Garreau explains how places like Santa Fe could represent "a new form of urbanity" — and a direct challenge to existing Edge Cities, which are places "where the vast majority of economic growth and substantial real estate development occurred in the late 20th century U.S.," noted Christopher B. Leinberger of George Washington University in the Summer 2018 issue of Development magazine.
