The rapid development of vaccines to defeat COVID-19 was a hugely important step in the fight against the disease, which has killed and sickened million around the world since it first appeared in China in late 2019. However, the initial distribution of these vaccines was a major logistical challenge. Because both Pfizer and Modern's vaccines require ultra-cold storage, many analysts in the commercial real estate industry assumed that refrigerated warehouses would see a boom in demand. However, Development managing editor Trey Barrineau delved into the topic and learned that these vaccines actually wouldn't require a huge amount of space in cold warehouses. (For example, a single shipping palette of the Moderna vaccine holds roughly 230,400 doses.) Barrineau examined the distribution challenges around the vaccines, as well as the business case for adding ultra-cold rooms for pharmaceutical products to existing refrigerated facilities.
