Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
2021 was a year unlike any other and Water Quality Products Managing Editor Lauren Del Ciello's 2021 editor’s letters seek to reflect that while offering a beacon of hope for WQP readers—many of which are small business owners in the residential/commercial water treatment industry and acutely felt the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. All 2021 editorial letters demonstrated a tenacity to understand the core of the issues the water treatment industry is facing while seamlessly weaving in personal antidotes and connections.
All three of the editor’s letters selected for this entry weave together the personal and professional, coupled with insights regarding the impending Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act. The May letter includes personal perspectives on the water access gap, coupled with insight from the CEO of the Rural Community Assistance Partnership. The June letter incorporates the editor’s personal life and love of hiking, while reflecting on 50 years of water quality improvements brought on by the historic Cuyahoga River Fire. The October letter digs into the editor’s experience visiting a wastewater treatment plant, providing her unique perspective as a water quality improvement editor. The letter challenges readers to re-think their relationship with the water cycle and was met with numerous positive reader letters in response to the challenge issued.
Overall, the letters challenged the editor to bridge the personal and professional in new ways, while continuously staying in dialogue with readers. After all, if COVID-19 has taught us anything, it's that we are first and foremost human, but also professionals.
