Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
As of summer 2020, the FBI had more than 1,000 intellectual property theft cases open involving individuals associated with the People’s Republic of China. These thefts have cost the United States nearly $500 billion a year and pose enormous challenges for private organizations looking to protect their trade secrets and maintain their competitive advantage in an increasingly global marketplace.
To help Security Management readers understand this threat and how it could potentially be mitigated, Senior Editor Megan Gates researched China’s history of intellectual property theft and arranged an interview with James Lewis, senior vice president and director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies Technology Policy Program, who conducted an analysis of China’s economic and trade practices for the U.S. Treasury Department.
Gates attended the RSA Conference in San Francisco in February 2020 where she met William Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, and arranged a lengthy interview to discuss intellectual property theft, the threat from China, and outreach the U.S. government is providing to the private sector to help prevent thefts.
Additionally, Gates researched cases of intellectual property theft and Chinese corporate espionage, along with interviewing security practitioner and investigative consultant Sandra Stibbards. This work resulted in an in-depth feature article that provided Security Management readers with an understanding of the scope of intellectual property theft by China, measures they can take within their own organizations to prevent it, and actions needed at the global level to curb China’s activity.
