In March 2020, the Summer issue of NAIOP's Development magazine was nearly finished when the COVID-19 pandemic exploded across the U.S. The disease was not only a unique threat to human life; it also endangered the commercial real estate industry in numerous ways. Would struggling retail outlets survive? What was the future of the office in a work-from-home world? Can warehouses handle the massive surge in e-commerce orders? The answers had to be provided quickly, and Development magazine's staff rose to the challenge, turning on a dime to produce a Summer issue entirely dedicated to the pandemic on an extraordinarily tight deadline.

The five feature stories on COVID-19 in the Summer issue provide an overview of the crisis. They also examine impacts on retail, office and industrial properties. Many of the high-level experts quoted in the articles participated in a series of webinars that NAIOP hosted for commercial real estate professionals in the weeks after the pandemic began.

"Development magazine was literally revamped overnight to provide you with the most current and important insights and perspectives on not only dealing with the immediate challenges facing us today, but also on how to be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as our markets inevitably recover,' NAIOP President and CEO Thomas Bisacquino wrote in a column for the Summer issue.
