Investor relations officers of Fortune 500 and other public companies – the audience of IR Update magazine – operate at the nexus of corporate communications from a financial and investor perspective. In 2020, three major concerns rose to the forefront in their profession: the pandemic, diversity/equity/inclusion, and how artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming investor decision-making. IR Update magazine responded with three issues (Spring, Summer, and Fall 2020) that covered these topics in-depth from several perspectives. The Spring issue explored how to run an investor relations program during a pandemic and maintain virtual communications with investors. The Summer issue led with a major article on racism expanding diversity in the profession, a feature on progress in closing the gender pay gap, and a moving first-person commentary column on racism delivered by a Black investor relations professional. The Fall issue included five feature articles that covered major aspects of the rapidly accelerating move to artificial intelligence as a driving factor in investor decision-making and how investor relations professionals can effectively engage in AI to match this external trend.
