In March 2020, the Summer issue of NAIOP's Development magazine was nearly finished when the COVID-19 pandemic exploded across the U.S. The disease was not only a unique threat to human life; it also endangered the commercial real estate industry in numerous ways. Would struggling retail outlets survive? What was the future of the office in a work-from-home world? The answers had to be provided quickly, and Development magazine's staff rose to the challenge, producing a Summer issue entirely dedicated to the pandemic on an extraordinarily tight deadline.

"Development magazine was literally revamped overnight to provide you with the most current and important insights and perspectives on not only dealing with the immediate challenges facing us today, but also on how to be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as our markets inevitably recover,' NAIOP President and CEO Thomas Bisacquino wrote in a column for the Summer issue. "I highly commend Development’s editorial staff for their ability to change direction at a moment’s notice."

Subsequent issues continued that commitment to in-depth coverage of the pandemic. Articles across three issues touched on every conceivable impact of COVID-19 on the use of space in retail, office and warehouse settings. The result was a package of stories that helped real estate professionals navigate the biggest business challenge of their lifetimes.
