Description of the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
This department highlights trends in cybersecurity and shares best practices to help businesses take a proactive approach in protecting their networks, devices, and data. Articles are written for a general security audience, so everyone from the most seasoned expert to the everyday practitioner can understand complex, technical subjects.
The June, July, and August 2020 Cybersecurity departments demonstrate the range of topics Senior Editor Megan Gates routinely covers, as well as the research that goes in to making each department timely and relevant to Security Management’s readership. In June’s “Preying on Fear,” Gates researched how malicious actors were leveraging coronavirus themed tactics—including posing as the World Health Organization—to scam victims and potentially gain access to sensitive corporate information.
In July’s “Flight Risks,” Gates took a deep dive into the world of drones to understand the cybersecurity risks to the popular physical security devices—some of which were grounded by the U.S. Department of Interior pending an internal review into their vulnerabilities. Gates spoke with drone security experts and manufacturers to provide readers with an understanding of the threat landscape and tools to assess their risk.
In August’s “A Patrol Problem,” Gates analyzed one of the most important annual reports for the cybersecurity community—the Verizon Data Breach Incident Report. She reviewed the report, as well as conducted a lengthy interview with its lead author, about how despite major investments in patrolling the perimeters of their networks, many organizations lack the ability to quickly detect a cyber breach.
