The Scientist - Website of the Year
Issue or publication date: 2019
Publication name: The Scientist
Publishing company: LabX Media Group
Website home page: https://www.the-scientist.com
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
The Scientist is a media brand for life-science professionals and science enthusiasts—a publication
dedicated to covering a wide range of topics central to the study of cell and molecular biology,
genetics, and other biological fields. Through print articles, online stories, and multimedia
features, the magazine explores the latest scientific discoveries, trends in research, innovative
techniques, new technologies, business, and careers. It is read by leading researchers in industry
and academia who value penetrating analyses and broad perspectives on life-science topics both
within and beyond their areas of expertise. With an active social media presence, The Scientist
also attracts the attention of non-professionals who are curious about the intricacies of science
and the research enterprise. Written by prominent scientists and professional journalists, articles
in The Scientist are concise, accurate, accessible, and entertaining.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
The Scientist's hard-working editorial, design, development, creative services, and advertising staffs outdid themselves in 2019. With outstanding full issues, such as our special Artificial Intelligence issue in May and our beautiful July/August issue, which explored the maturation of individualized medicine, this year we continued our tradition of publishing hard-hitting feature stories, eye-popping infographics, insightful opinion pieces, and comprehensive news coverage on our website. In addition, we were very excited to launch a reinvigorated and reimagined approach to interactive features, such as dynamic infographics and crossword puzzles. And our readers responded. We continued the meteoric rise in traffic to our website and engagement across our social media platforms. In the final summation, 2019 was The Scientist's (and especially our website's) best-ever year, whether measured as pageviews (16.6 million), sessions (11.6 million), or new users (8.2 million). And the consistent quality of our work is a testament to the fact that our journalistic acumen and our commitment to serve our growing audience show no signs of fading.
For the judge's consideration, we've submitted some of our favorite glimpses at www.the-scientist.com in 2019, including an example of the interactive crossword puzzles we started in June, beautifully designed and written feature articles, probing science news pieces, and examples of the interactive infographics that we continue to focus our efforts and resources on.
