Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
NextGen: The NYSSCPA’s Professional Development Guide is a magazine targeted to recently licensed CPAs; accounting professionals who are in the process of, or contemplating, taking the CPA exam; college accounting majors; and high school students interested in accounting careers. The mission of the magazine is to encourage young people to enter the profession—and to provide guidance to young professionals at all early stages of their accounting career path. Working in tandem with the NextGen program team at the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), the magazine also promotes the benefits of NYSSCPA membership. Its content offers solutions for moving past the challenges professionals often face on their career paths—and invokes a sense of community. The articles focus on topics such as preparing for the CPA exam, achieving success in the job market, coping with workplace challenges, developing leadership skills, creating a positive workplace culture, adapting to the changing nature of the profession, and developing specialized practices within the profession. The magazine’s profiles focus on individuals who have achieved success by developing specialized practices. For example, the fall 2017 issue featured a Seattle-based CPA for the cannabis industry.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
In 2019, NextGen magazine introduced a new feature, Accounting for Good, that highlights accountants working in the public interest. Jason Camporese, a 36-year-old member of the NYSSCPA who serves as chief finance and operations officer at Scenic Hudson, was a natural choice to be profiled because he is within the under-40 demographic of most readers of the magazine. In addition, his organization’s land preservation and restoration work offered wonderful opportunities for a video component. Digital News Editor Zach Simeone traveled to Beacon, N.Y., where he met Camporese at Long Dock Park, a site recently restored and currently managed by Scenic Hudson. Simeone interviewed Camporese on video as they walked along the waterfront and a newly developed trail. During the interview, Camporese discussed his background working with nonprofits, the mission of Scenic Hudson in restoring natural habitats, as well as his own work managing the organization’s endowment, overseeing several of its departments and keeping up with regulations governing nonprofit organizations. Simeone then transcribed the interview for the print version. The profile was published in the Fall 2019/Winter 2020 issue of NextGen and on the NYSSCPA’s NextGen web page, and the video was posted on YouTube and the NextGen web page. The NYSSCPA promoted the Fall 2019/Winter2020 issue of NextGen magazine—which teased the Camporese interview on its cover—on October 25 via three forms of social media: Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
