Aaron Betsky is equal measures fearless and fluent. The president of the School of Architecture at Taliesin, and a prolific writer and critic, Betsky tackles fraught and timely issues in the design world for his Architect magazine column, and has no qualms about assuming the role of contrarian or provocateur. In the selection of posts we include here, he illustrates his range, whether he’s making the case for why the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki deserves to win the Pulitzer Prize, one of the profession’s highest honors, and contemplates the question of how to rebuild Notre Dame in Paris, given how the cathedral emerged over time through various phases of development. Almost always, Betsky manages to pinpoint the contentious issue of the moment and use his columns as a lightning rod to illuminate the heart of the debate. More than any of our other critics, he engages our readers in a give and take, and over time has built a faithful and large audience.
