The R.W. Kern Center at Hampshire College is the largest higher education project to achieve Living Building status. In this series of articles, we take a closer look at how the architects and the school accomplished that feat. In our January issue’s Innovative Detail article, author Tim Schuler turned a keen eye to the timber structure of the building, which was purposefully “left exposed, inspired by the Living Building Challenge’s push for material transparency.” In our Project 360 multimedia online feature, we examine the effect that the building has had on the rest of the campus, the students, and the teaching faculty. Author David Hill examined the issue through data and interviews, which is complemented with video and interactive illustrations. Rounding out the package is a podcast with Bruner/Cott Architects' Jason Jewhurst and Hampshire College past president Jonathan Lash, who talk about the groundbreaking project with senior editor Wanda Lau.
