Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Our mission, across the converging universes of print, digital, and social media, is to inspire and educate an audience of emerging and established architects and designers, design enthusiasts, and allied professionals around these core values: design innovation, technical excellence, best business practices, and social and environmental responsibility.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Telling the story of the design and engineering of a physical space is difficult for traditional print media, which are restricted to a mere two dimensions. Our Project 360 articles are highly in-depth multimedia stories, telling the story of a prominent, important building project from many angles. The article text itself is detailed and deeply reported. We expanded upon in-depth reporting (longer word counts than a typical print issue would allow) by visiting the sites and filming the spaces to best capture the a sense of place. Then we add more images, video of first-person accounts of the project and its effectiveness, and interactive illustrations that highlight extra features alongside the story in real-time help to make the experience of reading these worth the time you put into them. (Hearing echo and ambient noise while interviewing key sources on site add to the story of the building.) Two of our best this year are our stories about the high level of safety designed into the new One World Trade Center tower at Ground Zero in New York City and the sustainable design of the Kern Center at Hampshire College, which is the largest higher education building to pass the Living Building Challenge to date.
