Issue date (if applicable):
Publication name: ABA Journal
Publishing company: American Bar Association
Website home page: www.abajournal.com
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
The ABA Journal is the largest legal magazine in the country. In print and online, the Journal covers the trends, the influencers and the dynamics contributing to a fast-changing legal profession. Readership includes the more than 400,000 members of the American Bar Association and readers of abajournal.com, which is available for free to the public.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
ABAJournal.com's web news section provides a combination of original reporting, expert commentary and curated roundups of legal news throughout the workweek. While the magazine content is a showcase piece for our website, the majority of the Journal’s web stories are produced for its daily news blog, Law News Now, which forms the backbone of the publication’s daily, weekly and monthly newsletters.
The news pages provide a mix of coverage for a national audience that practices in a multitude of areas of law and holds diverse interests. The news section covers breaking news and produces second-day pieces that outline the impact of that news, helping readers stay informed about a rapidly changing legal landscape.
Reporters and contributors provide analysis and reporting of newsworthy court decisions, but also keep readers informed about emerging legal technology or other developments that could impact the practice of law. Shorter news pieces convey the crucial information and link to other publications’ articles for readers interested in diving deeper.
In a single day, reporters and contributors may cover trends in immigration law; new regulations for administrative law judges; the ABA's support for judicial independence in Hungary; a decision impacting law student loans from the Department of Education; the disbarment of a lawyer for unethical practices; what the TV show Better Call Saul gets right about attorneys; and tips for implementing new cybersecurity measures at law firms.
