Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Launched in 1916, Pit & Quarry magazine covers the multi-billion-dollar aggregate mining industry. It serves as the leading equipment and technology media source for the crushed stone and sand- and-gravel industries, offering readers relevant information about the latest industry news.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Pit & Quarry annually publishes a year-end State of the Industry report that details the overall status of the aggregate industry—including the economic, legal and strategic aspects—as well as forecasts what to expect for the following year.
Because there are so many aspects of the industry to consider, the P&Q staff outlined a plan designed to tell a comprehensive story about the state of the construction materials industry in the magazine's December 2018 edition.
Editor-in-Chief Kevin Yanik leveraged Pit & Quarry's contributors for their expertise in market forecasting, mergers and acquisitions, and mine safety, publishing content from these industry leaders within a special section. Yanik also engaged Pit & Quarry's readers through phone interviews and an online survey to capture a wider snapshot of the industry. Reader comments and survey data appear throughout the report, offering a sense of the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. In all, the report spans 39 pages.
This year, the section contained a new P&Q staff-written article featuring the top 10 most-read articles of 2018 by P&Q readers. The article reminded readers about the hard-hitting industry news of the year and highlights the top technology trends we saw—a topic that’s ever-increasing in popularity.
The goal of our State of the Industry report is to tell a compelling story about the industry and the progress it’s made over the course of a year, and we’re confident we did just that.
