The devastation wrought by opioids is spilling into factories and construction sites across the country. For the February 2018 issue, DWM editor Trey Barrineau took a look at how window companies in Ohio and Pennsylvania -- two of the regions hit hardest by the opioid epidemic -- are working to keep this scourge out of their facilities. As part of his extensive research, Barrineau summarized the latest scientific studies on opioids and the workforce, which suggest that drug abuse is playing a major role in the labor shortages that are affecting manufacturing and construction.

Additionally, Barrineau, in collaboration with contributing editor Jordan Scott, examined the confusion surrounding the legalization or decriminalization of marijuana across the country. While far less lethal than opioids, pot presents a plethora of legal challenges for employers and workers alike -- many of which remain unresolved.
