restaurant development + design (rd+d) is a user-driven resource for restaurant professionals charged with building new locations and remodeling existing units. Now in its seventh year, the publication provides a platform that allows professionals from divergent backgrounds to come together to share best practices, perspectives, and experiences in the pursuit of developing solutions they can apply in the building, maintenance and repairing of their various locations.

The bi-monthly magazine reaches more than 50,860 readers and 18,800 subscribers. Our readership includes decision makers in 90% of the top 400 chain restaurants, as well as multi-unit independent restaurant operators, architecture and design firms, contractors/builders, and consultants.

This unique collection of readers receives original, compelling content in a highly visual and design-focused format via print and digital avenues. rd+d produces two separate monthly eNewsletters, the award-winning restaurant design digest, and the Product Showcase. In 2016, rd+d added its own awards program for restaurant design as well as two industry events: Tour the Design Trends and the Foodservice Equipment & Design Global Thought Leadership Summit. These events gave our readers new opportunities to learn, network and be inspired by their peers.

Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:

The feature article “Art meets Algorithms in Data Driven Designs” talks about how data science is changing the way people design restaurants. Thus, the goal was to create something that married the visual qualities of design and science. The flowing linear graphic element is used to convey visual data representation while the typographic treatment is used to reinforce that image. This is done through the height of the columns complementing the linear graphic element, a font that is very geometric, and a simplistic color palette.
