Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
The flagship magazine of the American Bar Association, the ABA Journal is a general interest legal publication covering the trends, people and finances of the legal industry. Its audience includes the more than 400,000 members of the ABA, readers of ABAJournal.com, those engaged on social media, and podcast listeners.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Opening Statements is the fast-paced front of the book for the ABA Journal, covering the latest news, hot topics, trends, profiles and industry data. OS can range from popular culture to social justice in the span of four to six pages, providing readers with a combination of lighter fare and thought-provoking stories. This section offers shorter articles; “10 Questions” with fascinating individuals in the industry; a Cartoon Contest; and ‘quick bytes’ on the popular Hearsay page. The section’s goal is to offer easily digestible stories and statistics that engage and enlighten.
Over a three-month period in 2017, in our April, May and June issues, some of the important (and fun!) legal topics we covered were:
--The rise in hate crimes and how affinity bar groups, such as the Asian American and Hispanic Bar Associations, are stepping up to offer pro bono services to educate and defend the public.
--A profile of an Indiana family law attorney who has a remarkable second career as a high fashion designer.
--A movement by lawyers who are independent contractors to push for overtime pay.
--A Q&A with a former NFL player who is now a family court judge working to better his community.
--How the ACLU is turning to Silicon Valley to help manage a surge in support for its mission.
--A profile of a Canadian attorney involved in the extreme sport of feral horse racing around the world.
