Edtech Heroes: 25 State Leaders Making a Difference

Publication name: EdScoop

Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
EdScoop is an online publication that delivers breaking news and original analysis for and about top federal, state and local education leaders driving technology and digital learning decisions in the K-12 and higher education market. Our staff reporters and editors focus primarily on how schools and universities are adapting technology in classrooms, school districts and college campuses across America. We also report on technology developments that are likely to have an impact on blended learning and instruction, privacy and security issues, virtual schools, student and teacher assessments, STEM and digital equity.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Behind the gadgets and gizmos that have transformed American classrooms in recent years are real people who committed themselves and their careers to ensuring technology works for and with students, rather than against them.
With this in mind, EdScoop decided to launch its inaugural EdTech Heroes project — and for this one, we focused especially on leaders and educators who work either at the state level, like a state education department, or on behalf of an entire state or states.
The reporting took almost three months, as it involved interviewing all 45 candidates, plus their colleagues, before deciding which 25 individuals would be recognized as an EdTech Hero. In writing the profiles of the 25 finalists, reporters Emily Tate and Kate Roddy had to do extensive background research to understand the policies, practices and procedures in each candidate’s respective state.
The 25 profiles offer a rare bit of “good news” by giving credit where credit is due. The content package recognizes those whose long nights, early mornings and tireless effort has contributed to something that markedly improves conditions for students, teachers and even entire states. Together, these profiles create a mosaic of educator voices, describing how each person’s unique experiences inform their approaches and stoke their passions for learning-centered technology.
