As companies in the door and window industry struggle to find qualified workers, the automation of manufacturing is becoming critical to the industry's very survival. DWM devoted its March 2017 issue to the topic, and also covered it in a feature story in the June-July 2017 issue.

In March, editor Trey Barrineau, aided by contributing editor Katherine Coig, put together two features that examined the growing role of robotics, automated processes and software in the production of residential doors and windows. One story quoted numerous sources and pulled in dozens of relevant statistics for an in-depth look at an industry in transition. The second feature delved into the specifics of how integrated software actually does the heavy lifting in a modern door and window factory. Eight people from different segments of the industry shared their knowledge about the topic.

In June-July, Barrineau (with an assist from Ellen Rogers) examined the possibility of robots not just building windows, but also installing them in houses. (It's already happening on a limited scale in modular home construction.) But while the possibilities are intriguing, it'll be "a long, long time before we see humanoid robots strutting around construction sites,” Mic Patterson, director of strategic development for Schuco-USA, told DWM. Despite that, Barrineau's article made clear that we're in the very early stages of the robotics and automation revolution.
