In a time of tremendous social and political upheaval, what lessons can aspiring movement lawyers learn from those that were active in the 1960s?

That was the focus of Victor Li’s group profile of civil-rights-era lawyers Stephen Bingham, Paul Harris, Timothy Jenkins, Bruce Margolin and Tony Serra. Li asked them about their famous clients, which include the likes of Huey Newton, Timothy Leary and the San Quentin Six. These movement lawyers also spoke about what motivated them to take up their respective causes.

One of the biggest challenges in this piece was finding people from that era who are still alive and have a clear recollection of what happened a half century ago. And Li creatively found a narrative that joined these disparate profiles, noting how many knew each other and at times represented each other in court.

At the end, these lawyers offered their advice for today’s lawyers taking up activist causes in racial, gender and social justice areas. The tips ran from keeping expenses low through sharing living space to the ultimate challenge—being excellent lawyers.
