Entry Essay:
The audience for the Targeting AI podcast from TechTarget Editorial includes executives at organizations with the latitude to shape operations or implement AI systems. These executives see AI and machine learning as a means of improving their businesses and aren't necessarily well-versed in the field. Also among our listeners are people concerned with regulatory aspects of AI, ethics and governance. The audience also includes developers and AI engineers who are looking for new information to help them do their jobs better and IT experts who work with AI technology.
In this episode of Targeting AI, a biweekly podcast that started in July 2023 and is co-hosted by Shaun Sutner and Esther Ajao, we interviewed two experts about the voice and other deepfakes that threatened the integrity of the U.S. elections in November. Many are familiar with the deepfake images and videos created and altered with AI technology that circulated in previous elections. Still, the recent emergence of generative AI-fueled voice cloning – some capable of producing speech in thousands of languages -- has greatly amplified the ability of hackers, nation states and other malicious actors to quickly create high-quality realistic-sounding voices. With these new AI tools, fraudsters have been able to scale deepfake audios to try to influence outcomes in national and local elections. The podcast also explored ways organizations can identify and deal with voice deepfake attacks.
