Banking Exchange Typography
Issue date (if applicable):
Publication name: Banking Exchange
Publishing company: Simmons Boardman Publishing
Website home page: bankingexchange.com
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Banking at one time was a stable, almost sleepy industry, where the biggest problem was whether to add a branch on the north side of town. No longer. Bankers at 6,000 U.S. commercial and savings banks—the primary audience of Banking Exchange magazine—come to work each day facing a daunting array of challenges. These range from dealing with complex government regulations to changing consumer attitudes and behaviors regarding money, to the competitive onslaught of hundreds of new technology-driven companies that offer financial products. The goal of these "fintech" competitors is to "Uberize" some part of the traditional banking business, and they are doing just that in some areas. The mission of Banking Exchange magazine and its companion website, bankingexchange.com, is to assist bankers to deal with these and many other challenges and to provide them with "competitive intelligence." We focus on the evolving business of banking, offering not only solutions but also ideas that challenge conventional thinking. In print we reach 27,500 bank executives and managers from small and large banks across the country—47% top management and 42% middle management. In sum, Banking Exchange writers and contributors strive to do three things: Inform, Assist, Challenge.

Building a typographic Brand: BANKING Exchange
Development of a Logo Design
Dozens of ideas were developed
We were inspired by the X in exchange
The X with white spaces looks clean and modern.
Inside:
The font Proxima Nova is used for headers, decks, headlines and pull quotes. It has a variety of weights and looks modern. We wanted bold, short and serious looking headlines. a modern current typographic look was important.
In contrast we used a traditional font Miller text for the body copy. We liked its legibility and serious look.
Headers
We were inspired by what is happening in the financial industry. The industry is very digital and techy -- We used slashes with text as a graphic for the headers in deptartments and TOC. The slash was inspired from what we see on websites and mobile.
Upfront section: Infographics
The news section threads begins with a large image and Infographics. -- Charts, graphs, diagrams and maps have always existed but now we are seeing them used on their own. These elements were designed for this section creating a typographic language throughout the magazine.
Flat typographic elements mimic design elements that we are seeing in social media plus a limited color palette and flat images.
The core of the magazine remains its long features. There’s a balance between infographics and photography and color. We want the features to be surprising and engaging…not dense even though it’s a serious subject matter.
