Publication name: Addiction Professional
Publishing company: Vendome Healthcare Media

Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Addiction Professional is the addiction treatment specialist's guide to clinical services for patients with substance use disorders, a trusted forum on issues affecting treatment success. Its core readership is the addiction counselor or other clinical professional who works with patients on an everyday basis, mostly in residential or outpatient treatment facilities. The publication's mission is to provide clinicians with tools to achieve success with their patients and to meet the associated challenges of their job, including their own self-care and career advancement.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
The chance that a patient in addiction treatment could die from the disease lingers over all treatment centers, but facilities often fail to offer their clinicians much-needed support after a current or former patient's death. Contributing writer Alison Knopf in the Fall 2015 issue offered an informative and poignant look at a largely unaddressed issue that can compromise a clinician's ability to remain an effective caregiver.
Through interviews with clinicians and clinical directors, the article conveyed the intense emotion and second-guessing that a counselor can experience after the loss of a patient. The article offers specific examples of situations that were handled poorly in treatment centers, sometimes over matters as basic as whether it is appropriate for a counselor to attend a patient's funeral. The effect on clinicians can be damaging and long-lasting, with some feeling compelled to resolve these issues in therapy themselves.
Self-care for often overworked healthcare professionals remains a prominent theme throughout the industry. In keeping with Addiction Professional's mission of giving readers tools for clinical excellence, this article goes beyond clichéd approaches to the subject, giving readers from treatment programs a road map for how to acknowledge the reality of death and how to offer clinicians the proper time and space to mourn.
