Entry details
A Man of Winning Ways
Issue date (if applicable): 4/1/2015
Publication name: tED magazine
Publishing company: NAED
Website home page: www.tedmag.com
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Published by the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED), tED magazine is the primary source of information for the electrical distribution channel across North America. tED covers what electrical distributors need to know to better perform their day-to-day functions. Suppliers also read tED to learn how to better go to market through distribution.
tED magazine is distributed to NAED members and affiliates. While targeted to the electrical distributor salesperson, tED is also read by key executives in the electrical distribution channel.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Background:
Each year tED takes an in-depth look at the winner of NAED’s highest honor: the Arthur W. Hooper Achievement Award.
Enterprising work:
Carol Katarsky interviewed seven people to present to readers with the complete picture of award-winner Jack Henderson.
Adding to the challenge was the fact that Jack had been featured in tED just five years earlier (when he was elected NAED chair). Carol deftly avoided repeating the story already told, mining fresh and revealing content about a man everyone thought they “already knew everything there was to know” by weaving into the article recollections from Jack’s friends, co-workers, and peers.
Carol made a point of interviewing Jack’s friends first, so she could “surprise” him with facts she already knew about him—a touch that he found “delightful!”
A tED freelance photographer traveled to the company’s headquarters to capture the subject of this cover story.
Significance/impact:
1. Many tED readers are business owners who can relate to—and learn from—a story of a man who rose from an entry-level job to an executive position in a family-owned and operated company.
2. Reader response to the article cited great satisfaction with how the article captured Jack’s personality and style.
3. The Arthur W. Hooper Achievement Award has been given out by the association 22 times (including this one) and is one of the most eagerly awaited announcements of the year. The story is reprinted and distributed at the association’s annual National Meeting awards banquet.
