Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Health Facilities Management provides more than 40,000 professionals involved in the design, construction and operations of U.S. hospitals with actionable information to optimize hospital building performance and improve quality and safety. Our readership consists of all stakeholders involved planning, designing, building and operating health care facilities, including architects, interior designers, engineers, facilities managers, environmental services directors and more.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Our editors partnered with the American Society for Healthcare Engineers and the Association for the Healthcare Environment on this unique survey project aimed at measuring how hospitals and health systems are doing in creating sustainable facilities and operations. This is the third time we've revisited this topic since 2010 and this year's data clearly illustrated that respondents remain in the early phases of mastering environmental stewardship despite paying closer attention to issues like recycling, improving energy management and water conservation efforts, and using more environmentally friendly products to clean and disinfect facilities.
Liberal and creative use of graphics to tell the data portion of the story and a great sidebar that looked at some individual organizations helped present this wealth of research information at both the national and local level. Moreover, the report provided deep insights from some of the top minds in the health care sustainability field. These experts not only interpreted the results but shared ideas for facilities to focus on to move beyond the low-hanging fruit that so many organizations still focus on as they try to improve performance in this area.
