The FABRICATOR delivers the news, technical articles, and case studies that enable 58,000 subscribers who bend, cut, form, and join metal to do those activities more efficiently. It is the official publication of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association and has served the industry since 1971.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
The only hype that has surpassed that for 3-D printing probably has to be the promotion associated the latest entry into the Star Wars series of movies.
This manufacturing process, where tiny particles of plastic or metal are placed layer-upon-layer and cured almost instantaneously to create 3-D parts, is being declared the future of manufacturing. While these technology evangelists look to convert more manufacturers into believers, the rest of the world has to go to work, making parts and on-time delivery deadlines.
Newcomb Spring Corp., Ooltewah, Tenn., is one metal manufacturer that has kept an eye on this new technological development and put it to use. It's not a significant portion of its manufacturing-related revenue, but 3-D printing is playing a part in maintaining good customer relationships. The new process of 3-D printing is helping the company with the age-old dilemma of maintaining quality efforts in the midst of hectic production schedules.
Senior Editor Tim Heston has the story in "Quality springs forward with 3-D printing" (February 2015, The FABRICATOR).
