Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
Automotive News serves automakers, suppliers and dealers. Our 61,000 paid subscribers are split roughly into thirds: dealers; automakers and suppliers; and others. Our mission is to be the primary source of industry news, data and insight for the industry’s decision makers. We provide our audience the information they need, in a timely manner and in the format that they desire. Automotive News (in weekly tabloid print, digital and e-newsletter formats), autonews.com, Automotive News Europe, our daily webcasts -- First Shift in the a.m. and AutoNews Now in the p.m. -- and our specialized e-newsletters are part of Crain Communications. Our website has 561,000 registered users and 1.9 million visits a month. As the industry’s premier publication, we have unparalleled access to top industry executives. All but a few of our articles are staff written. The breadth of our coverage shows in our regular monthly pages/departments: Production Line, Connected Car, Marketing, Finance & Insurance, Fixed Operations, and Remarketing. The first is devoted to supplier/technology news; the last three to key dealership profit centers. Industry executives pay up to $1,500 to attend our annual events, proof that they see value in the presentations and networking opportunities. These include (with latest attendance): Automotive News World Congress, in Detroit (1,200+), L.A. and N.Y. marketing seminars (1,000+; 600+); Best Dealerships To Work For seminars and dinner, in Chicago (450), and PACE awards for supplier innovation, in Detroit (450).
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Automotive News’ multifaceted “100 Leading Women in the North American Auto Industry” focused on a topic critical to an industry that struggles to find the people resources it needs. General Motors CEO Mary Barra described “100 Leading Women” as a vital element in the effort to elevate women in the car business. The special section helped frame the issue and positioned Automotive News squarely in the middle of the discussion.
The year-long project included a 128-page print section, many hours of video reports and a sold-out event attended by 950 people, including honorees, their family members (including daughters) and colleagues. Profiles of the industry’s 100 most powerful and accomplished women plus 20 feature stories and graphics examined the opportunities and difficulties women face in a business with a boys’ club reputation. Profiles were written by 19 staff reporters and two freelancers. The video package — online at autonews.com/leadingwomen — includes a roundtable discussion with 10 honorees at Automotive News’ TV studio, interviews with four others and 28 “Having Her Say” vignettes. Also online: links to the project on Facebook and LinkedIn.
We live-tweeted the Nov. 9 awards ceremony, using #ANLeadingWomen, individually naming honorees with photos in each tweet. Audience members and companies retweeted us, and in turn we retweeted their words of congratulations to the honorees. Also that night, Automotive News announced that the project has spawned the Leading Women Network: a connected community to educate, mentor and create opportunities for women.
