Issue date (if applicable):
Publication name: XpertHR
Publishing company: Reed Business Information Inc.
Website home page: http://www.xperthr.com/employee-handbooks/
Please describe the publication's mission and readership:
XpertHR.com helps HR professionals understand and stay current with employment law developments at the federal, state and local level. Integral to XpertHR's mission is monitoring and digesting extensive and complex employment laws across all 50 states and over 300 municipalities, and translating the developments into practical, actionable information and tools to make the HR professional's job more efficient and compliant, freeing them up for more strategic activities.
The Employee Handbooks tool was the most significant enhancement to the site and provides national, 50-state, and key municipal guidance and templates for the business critical employee handbook. Developing and maintaining an employee handbook is one of the most important risk management tools for HR, and one of the most challenging, often costing thousands of dollars, weeks of time and angst to maintain. This new employer resource is kept current with changing and emerging laws, includes a monthly newsletter, and practical tips on whether a topic should be included in a handbook and how to manage the issue in a compliant manner.
Employers have been clamoring for this resource and it's become our top content accessed on the site month over month since launch, helping increase our sales and improve renewals.
The site is geared to HR professionals. Users range from HR VPs to HR generalists, as well as general managers and business owners. XpertHR's subscriber base ranges in size from very small (less than 50 employees) to many of the Fortune 100 companies and from virtually all industry sectors.
Please describe the enterprising work that went into this entry and its significance or impact on readers:
Hundreds of thousands of workplaces have employee handbooks which are largely based on legal mandates. HR professionals find keeping handbooks current with rapidly changing laws, incorporating federal/state/municipal requirements, addressing multistate workforces and really understanding which topics and issues are appropriate (and advisable) for a handbook vs. not.
To develop the most authoritative, current, accurate, and practical information, we partnered with the top US employment law firm, Littler Mendelson, to prepare the content, which includes over 80 handbook nationally-applicable policy templates and 10-100 for every state (the number varies by state due to the wide ranging laws from state to state)! Each policy template also includes detailed compliance guidance and information on which employers should include the policy in their handbook.
Keeping the tool current has been quite challenging due to a myriad of legal developments among the states, from changing Equal Employment Opportunity protections, (eg. for transgender employees), to addressing the broad implications of the Supreme Court's ruling on same sex marriage, to the trend among cities and states to mandate paid sick leave. Creating and updating materials for handbooks to keep up with these complex developments has been onerous, but as a result highly valued to subscribers. The resource is supplemented with a monthly enewsletter summarizing key developments affecting handbooks with links to updated materials. We also have a daily topic alert for subscribers who prefer that mechansm for monitoring.
Feedback from the market has been tremendously strong, usage has skyrocketed and new users are clamoring for the tool.
